Apple Cider Mill

Apple Cider is fall’s sweetest harvest.

Tree-ripened local apples. 100% natural, unfiltered juice.
NO added sugar or water.

We started with nothing more than a backyard cider press, barrels of Jonagold Apples, and a curiousity for what pressed apples would taste like. And, that is how the Abbotsford Applebarn Cider Mill came to be. Over two decades later, we are still growing, harvesting, and producing apple cider at our farm, only now we don’t use a hand-cranked machine. (Gets hard on the hands after a while!)

Mouth-Watering Facts

  • ONE OF THE WORLD’S OLDEST FRUITS Archeologists have evidence that humans have been enjoying apples since 6500 B.C.
  • WOW! SO MANY APPLES! It takes approximately 25 apples to make one gallon (3.78 litres) of pure apple cider.
  • LOADED WITH VITAMINS AND NUTRIENTS You know what they say, an apple a day will keep the doctor away!

Fresh, Flash Pasteurized Apple Cider

What is Apple Cider?

Fresh apple cider is one of our signature products. In fact, on some weekends you can watch it being made through our Cider-Viewing Window! Apple cider is apple juice that is unfiltered — it’s like orange juice with pulp. With no added sugar, it’s 100% natural, and safe for everyone to drink–just like biting into a bunch of fresh apples. One taste and we are sure that everyone in your home will be asking for more!

Why does the Apple Cider’s flavour change slightly?

Some people ask ‘why the cider’s colour or flavour changes’, from one week to the next. This is because we press with the apples available at that time. Late August/Early September cider includes varieties that ripen at the onset of fall and, mid to late fall, we use late-harvest apples as the season progresses. By the time October comes around, Jonagolds are ready and we are able to press all of our apples. The end result is a unique blend that brings a full-bodied burst of flavour.

Where can I buy it and how long does it stay fresh?

It is only available at our Country Store during regular business hours from mid August until October 31st. Fresh cider is sold in plastic jugs and date-stamped with a ‘best before’ date of two weeks. It must be refrigerated, but you can freeze it and keep it for one year.

Small tip: since liquids expands when frozen, it’s best to drink a cup or two before freezing.

What is Unique about Applebarn Cider versus Store-Bought Apple Juice?

We have an estate cider mill, which means that our cider is made from a blend of our very own apples. We press a blend into Flash Pasteurized juice.  We choose the highest quality apples and make, what we like to believe, is the sweetest, healthiest apple juice around!  You can watch the cider being made before your very eyes.

What is the difference between flash pasteurization and pasteurization?

Slow pasteurization uses pasteurization temperatures for several minutes; e.g. typical temperature–time combinations are 63 to 65°C over 30 minutes or 75°C over 8 to 10 minutes. Rapid, high or flash pasteurization uses pasteurization temperatures of about 85 to 90°C or more for a time only in the order of seconds.

Benefits. Flash pasteurization is especially beneficial to maintain the natural flavor, color and nutritional compounding of liquid products such as fruit juices and milk. This method can further expand the shelf life of products compared to the traditional pasteurization method.

Pasteurized Cider

We take tree-ripened fruit, add no additives, and then use a UV treatment process. We take our fresh cider and heat it before putting the hot cider in glass jars with rubber sealed lids.  The heat seals the lids so the glass jars of cider can remain unrefrigerated until opened.

How long does it stay fresh?

Pasteurized bottles have a shelf life of up to five years, if unopened. Once opened, freshness is optimal for up to one month in the fridge.
